Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga PPV Gets Premium Price Tag

For the last several years, unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO’s) openly scoffed at the desires of the boxing fans. His latest slap in the face has come in the form of an outrageous pay-per-view price tag. More traditionally however, he has accomplished this by consistently dodging his WBC mandatory challenger, David Benavidez. To do so, Canelo has maintained two favorite methods of naked evasion.

The first is repeatedly stating the ridiculous notion that Benavidez, an undefeated, two-time champion, has done nothing in the sport. The second is demanding prizefight purses that only Dr. Evil could dream up. Now, he is once again flipping off the paying customers by charging a whooping $90 pay-per-view price to see him battle the legitimately unaccomplished and unproven Edgar Berlanga.

DO AS I SAY!

The way that Canelo is moving is insulting because it’s clear that he undeniably understands what his fanbase wants and openly spits on those desires. In his mind, his past achievements, as lofty as they may be, have exonerated him from any and all future responsibility. This is precisely why he regularly says “I can do what I want.”

The trouble with this logic is that his past deeds have nothing to do with the money that the public will have to dig out of their pockets in the very near future. Can your local fire department kick up their feet when your house is currently ablaze because they put out flames last week? Can a bodyguard pick and choose to protect you this year because they did a great job last year?

Said to say, when and where does this entitled logic work anywhere in the world, in any profession? Why should the fans pay well above the average going-rate to see a fight against a guy that no one asked to see, and has accomplished nothing of substance while the demanded fight goes ignored? In Canelo’s world, it’s because the little people should be happy just for the privilege of seeing him gloving up. For this reason, it will be very interesting to see how well this next show sells. Will the fans continue to submit to a tyrannical noble or will this be one push too many? Time will tell!
