Deontay Wilder Believes Oleksandr Usyk is Terrified of Fighting Him
Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) is the unified heavyweight champion and one of the most respected fighters in the sport. But according to former WBC champion Deontay “Bomb Squad” Wilder (43-2-1, 42 KOs), Usyk doesn’t want any part of him in the ring.
RUNNING SCARED?
Usyk is preparing to defend the titles against WBA Regular champion Daniel Dubois on August 26 in Poland. Speaking to 78 Sports TV, Wilder said the following about the unified champion:
“That man terrified of me. He’s dodged me so many times, and I know, and don’t act like I don’t know. I don’t want nobody to come out like Usyk saying this and that. It’ll be a lie because I know a lot of shit.
I’m in the business, I know. He’s been offered a lot of money to fight me, many times. But he’s denied it. They said he did not want Bomb Squad problems.”
In the fall of 2022, there were talks of a fight between the two fighters. Wilder was up to do it. Those talks dissipated when the unified champion tried to pursue a fight with the reigning WBC champion, Tyson Fury. But the heavyweight champions could not agree to terms.
A Usyk – Wilder battle would be a complete contrast in styles. Usyk is renowned for his boxing ability. Wilder is arguably the hardest puncher in the world. On paper, it’s a fascinating matchup.
Fans of Usyk would strongly disagree with Wilder’s statements. But does the former champion have a point, and is Usyk ducking a fight with Bomb Squad? Is Wilder Usyk’s boogeyman?
