Errol Spence Insists on his Rematch with Terence Crawford

A continuing topic among boxing fans is whether there will be a rematch between Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31, KOs) and Errol “The Truth” Spence (28-1, 22 KOs). According to the President of Showtime Sports, Stephen Espinoza, Spence is dead-set on wanting it to happen.

NOT BUDGING

Espinoza is currently on the press tour for the September 30 clash between undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and the undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo. But wherever Espinoza goes, the names of Crawford and Spence are mentioned.

Speaking to the news source Fight Hub TV, Espinoza said the following when asked about a Crawford – Spence rematch:

“Errol’s been consistent; he wants the rematch. He said it right after the fight. He hasn’t changed. There are a lot of conversations going on internally with his team. Some of them I’m privy to, some I’m not.”

“The question is, what’s best for his health? What’s best for his future? . . . I think all that is to be determined. But the one thing that is absolutely the case is Spence wants the rematch. The question is, as a team, do all his advisors agree that that’s the best way to go?”

On July 29, Crawford stopped Spence in nine rounds to become the undisputed welterweight champion. In that bout, Spence was knocked down three times and took a beating. After suffering the first loss of his professional career, the former unified 147-pound champion said he wants to fight Crawford again by the end of the year. However, he wants it at 154.

PLENTY TO BE DECIDED

There is an immediate rematch clause. Several boxing insiders wonder if it’s wise of Spence to insist on fighting Crawford so quickly. Despite that clause in the contract, Espinoza said there is room for flexibility for both parties, and multiple things could play out. Spence could decide he wants to take some time off. He could change his mind and take a tune-up fight before a second fight with Crawford.

Bud could wait on the outcome of the upcoming match between Alvarez and Charlo. Crawford and Charlo are bitter enemies. Charlo is on record saying that following his fight with Canelo, he plans to return to 154 to fight Crawford.

In the end, Espinoza feels that the biggest fight for Crawford is a rematch with Spence and vice-versa. At this point, it’s not a question of if there will be a rematch between Crawford and Spence, but when.
