David Morrell Continues to Impress with Stoppage Win Over Kalvin Henderson
In the co-main event to the Stephen Fulton v Daniel Roman title fight at the Minneapolis Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, saw unbeaten WBA regular 168-pound champion David “Osvary Morrell” Morrell (7-0, 6KOs) put his title on the line against Kalvin “Hot Sauce” Henderson (15-2-1, 11KOs).
A highly touted fighter, Morrell hails from Cuba and, at only 24 years old, has a bright future ahead of him. He arrived on the scene with a very impressive unanimous decision win over Lennox Allen back in August of 2020. With win in that fight against Allen, he would become the WBA interim 168-pound champion. Since that bout, he’s gotten back to his knockout ways as he’s obliterated his last three opponents.
His opponent, Henderson, knew he was a significant underdog heading into this fight. Hot Sauce is a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He turned pro in April of 2016. In seventeen bouts, he has one loss and one draw. Back in 2021, Henderson squared off with another super middleweight prospect, Isaiah Steen, where he would lose a unanimous decision. That fight was televised on Showtime as part of their SHOBOX series.
FAST START!
As soon as the first round began, Morrell immediately pressed forward, unleashing bone-thudding shots. The Cuban, an excellent offensive fighter, let both hands go as he ripped left and right hooks to the head and body. He also threw the uppercut with both hands as Henderson was relegated to covering up against the ropes.
As the fight continued, Morrell continued to dish out an unrelenting amount of punishment. While Henderson had minor success countering with the left hook and straight right hand, none of that deterred the determined Cuban!
ROUND FOUR WAS ALL SHE WROTE!
After having Henderson in major trouble in round three, Morrell would come out less aggressive, electing to set up his power shots by boxing from a distance using his jab. However, as the round got close to ending, a big right hand would hurt Henderson, and immediately the Cuban jumped in and poured on the hurt! He landed repeated, hard right hands until the referee jumped in to stop the fight.
Morrell is a fighter that everyone in the 168-pound division should keep their eyes on. At 24 years old, the sky seems to be the limit for the extremely talented boxer.
