Jorge Perez Defeats Charles Conwell and Seeks a Title
In his latest tour of duty, super welterweight Mexican import Jorge “Chino” Perez (33-4. 26 KO’s) out grinded top rated fighter Charles “Bad News” Conwell to nab a tight split decision upset victory. Naturally, this win has significantly shifted the current lay of the land.
Heading into this bout, had the cards fallen in his favor, Conwell had ambitions to face unified 154-pound champion Sebastian Fundora later this year. Sadly for Bad News, who entered the match ranked #2 (WBO), #5 (WBC) and #14 (IBF), these plans have now been scrapped.
It is unclear though if Perez will automatically inherit the duel with Fundora. First, given his stronger position in the rankings, we need to confirm that there is no rematch clause that must be honored with Conwell. Provided that Bad News truly is in his rear view mirror, and Fundora proves to be elusive, the next best choice for #3 (WBO) ranked Perez is Xander Zayas.
Like Conwell, Zayas is more heavily stacked with the sanctioning bodies, armed with his rankings of #1 (WBO), #2 (WBC) and #4 (IBF). Yet, their close proximity within the WBO makes their potential skirmish a realistic possibility.
Zayas is also fresh off a solid ninth round TKO win over Slawa Spomer on February 14, 2025. This is fortuitous timing if the two face one another next. Let’s stay tuned and see what is next for Jorge Perez after this very beneficial win.
“If it’s Sebastian Fundora, he is welcome! If it’s the other champion, he is welcome! Chino Garcia is here for anybody, at any time!”
