Gary Russell Jr Calls out Everybody
As a direct result of COVID-19 leaving most of the world shuttered up in their homes, an emerging trend has manifest itself among active boxers. A great number of fighters have taken to their social media outlets to either provide interviews or call other fighters out.
While this is a clear and conscious move to maintain visibility and relevance, it’s also a great source of entertainment.
One of the most recent contributors to this new trend of behavior is WBC world featherweight champion “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr (31-1, 18 KO’s). To his credit, Russell Jr is no newcomer to the world of call outs. In fact, in 2019 he probably had the most notorious and infamous call out of the year.
After finding the father of Leo Santa Cruz, Russell draped his arm over his shoulder and assured Cruz that he and his family could be ‘touched.’ Countless individuals criticized him for what was described as a crude threat to an older ill man.
Now, Russell is back at it again. Only this time, the WBC champion was handing out invites to a promised beat down wholesale.

When it comes to the notion of Russell Jr, the biggest knock against him is his inactivity. For the past five years he has only fought one bout per year. Even in this new era where fighters are lucky to do three fights in a year, this is excessively anemic.
Yet, let Russell tell it, he would love to fight more but insists that the top level opponents in his division want no part of him.
This is why in this recent call out video that he posted has set his attention upon the lightweight division. After issuing his open challenge, Russell hopped on a scale to prove that he was already right in the target area to make a fight with a top lightweight boxer.
So, now only time will tell if he does actually make the leap up or if he can secure a major fight.
