Claressa Shields Could Rematch Marshall or Crews-Dezurn Next
Now a three-time undisputed champion, Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (13-0, 2KO) has two rematch options. First there is former WBO middleweight champion Savannah Marshall (12-1, 10KO). Another option is undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn (8-1, 2KO).
A POSSIBLE REMATCH WITH MARSHALL IS AN OPTION
Shields claimed a UD over Marshall on October 15 to avenge her amateur loss to the former WBO champion. In the post-fight interview, Shields explained the rematch clause was conditioned on a controversial decision. By winning on all three judges’ scorecards, she is clear to move on from Marshall. However, she made it clear running it back was not a problem.
“Absolutely! If that’s what the fans want, then that’s what we gon’ do.”
Marshall hinted at a rematch being a possibility after being asked about sharing a cup of coffee with Shields.
“Maybe after the third one.”
Shields pointed out prior to the fight that Marshall’s talking about retirement gave her the advantage. With that being said, if the former WBO champion decides to follow through on retiring, what is next for Shields?
A POSSIBLE REMATCH AGAINST DEZURN-CREWS IS AN OPTION
This is where an old foe comes into play. Crews-Dezurn was in attendance at the O2 arena in support of Shields. The history between these two women goes back to the amateurs as well. Shields defeated Crews in the 2012 Olympic trials. Both were part of the 2016 Olympic team, and Shields defeated Crews when both women made their professional debut in 2016.
In addition, Crews holds the undisputed status in a division where T-Rex was once a unified champion. So, it would make sense for them to fight and label their bout as undisputed vs undisputed. It will be interesting to see what challenges Shields will look to dive into next.
