Thanongsak Simsri Destroys Mendoza in Two to Retain IBF Title

Thanongsak Simsri (40-1, 35 KOs) retained his IBF junior flyweight title in emphatic fashion, scoring a spectacular second-round knockout over mandatory challenger Sergio Mendoza at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. It was the type of performance that could propel Simsri toward a high-profile unification bout before the year’s end.

Entering the contest as a 2/1 underdog against the heavy-handed Mendoza (27-1, 23 KOs), Simsri wasted no time asserting himself. The Thai champion set the tone in the opening round, immediately earning his opponent’s respect.

Midway through the second, Simsri landed a sharp, straight right hand that visibly hurt the Mexican challenger. Sensing the moment, he unleashed a follow-up barrage, capped by a crushing left hook that sent Mendoza to his knees.

From that point on, Simsri pressed relentlessly for the finish. With just forty seconds remaining in the round, a thudding right hand to the jaw caused Mendoza to crumble once more. Having seen enough, the referee stepped in to wave off the contest.

Facing a taller, longer opponent known for his power, Simsri rose to the occasion with a composed and dominant display. It was a breakout performance—one that not only reinforces his legitimacy as a champion but also puts the entire division on notice.

BRIGHT FUTURE

With momentum firmly on his side, calls are already growing for Simsri to pursue a unification clash against unified champion Rene Santiago or WBC titleholder Shokichi Iwata. Having fought his last two bouts in Japan, a third consecutive appearance there—particularly against local star Iwata—would make for a compelling showdown.

Alternatively, Simsri could look to bring a marquee fight back home. If the financial terms align, enticing Santiago to Thailand would be a significant event for the region and a defining moment in Simsri’s career.

Whatever path lies ahead, one thing is certain: Simsri has arrived as a major force at 108 pounds. Fresh off a career-best win, now is the time for his team to capitalize and secure the biggest fights available.
