Has Tank Davis Truly Surpassed Floyd Mayweather as a Fighter?

Reigning WBA lightweight champion Gervona “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is one of boxing’s biggest stars. He’s also one of the sport’s hardest hitters. But does that mean he could defeat his former mentor, Hall of Famer Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (50-0, 27 KOs), if they ever fought?

THE BACKSTORY

At one time, Davis and Mayweather were tight like glue. Mayweather and promotional outlet Mayweather Promotions were used to guide Tank’s career. The Hall of Famer also served as a mentor to Davis. However, their relationship soured, and Davis left to run his own ship.

Since their split, the popularity of Tank has increased, and he’s referred to himself as the new face of the sport. As a result, a segment of the boxing community has gone on social media to claim that the 29-year-old has surpassed his former mentor and would beat a prime Mayweather at 135.

STUDENT DOES NOT SURPASS TEACHER

Davis is a hard hitter with excellent timing. He knows how to set fighters up and is a great finisher, once he gets an opponent in trouble. However, a prime Mayweather was at an entirely different level. Money Mayweather was a boxing savant. At lightweight, he was faster, more athletic, and had a far greater ring IQ.

Davis has a bad habit of fighting in spots. He also relies too much on his opponents to make mistakes so he can land with his power shots. No one who fights as one-dimensional as Davis would beat the likes of Mayweather. He simply has not touched the skill levels that Mayweather earned his reputation for.

Tank is a very good fighter in today’s standard. Mayweather is an all-time great who could fight in any era. Those who believe he beats Mayweather in the boxing ring can only be ignorant or blatantly disrespectful of how good Money was at his peak.
