Canelo Alvarez Shuts Down Hyped Narrative Around his Next Fight

For the second time in several months, undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KO’s) has received backlash over a potential fight. The first time came directly after he had just become the undisputed champ. The redhead was fresh off his eleventh round stoppage win over Caleb Plant. Looking to make a bit of noise, it was revealed that Alvarez was aiming to duel with WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu.

Team Canelo must have thought it sounded like a great idea to snag a belt in a fifth division. Unfortunately for them, the boxing populace immediately gave the prospective dustup a hard thumbs down. Now, the iconic Mexican is weathering a substantial amount of flack for allegedly turning down a two-fight deal offered by the PBC worth over $100 million. If accepted, Canelo would be required to dance with WBC middleweight champion Jermall “Iron Man” Charlo (32-0, 22 KO’s) in May and then David “Red Flag” Benavidez (25-0, 22 KO’s) in September.

GET THE STORY RIGHT!

Instead of taking that package, it was widely reported that the redhead was far more interested in a double duel with WBA Super light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11 KO’s) and IBF middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO’s). Aside from the PBC deal offering the fresher opposition, the bouts versus Charlo and Benavidez would pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million additional dollars.

Obviously making a move such as this will be dripping with “ducking” implications. Realizing the inherent ‘bad look’ given by this perception, the champion was quick to clarify the matter.

PICK YOUR DYNAMIC DUO!

It will be revealing to see what comes out of his situation next. While there are certainly some fans somewhere that want to see Alvarez versus Golovkin 3, there are not many! GGG has effectively slid into irrelevance by way of inactivity and shaky performances against less than stellar opposition.

There is nothing wrong with a showdown with Bivol, though. This would actually make for an intriguing battle that couldn’t be thought of as a guaranteed win for the redhead. Sadly, Bivol alone does not equal the same excitement and drama as the two-fight deal presented by PBC. So, we’ll just have to wait to see what Canelo Alvarez decides to do next!
