Canelo Alvarez Explains Why The Crawford Fight Won’t Happen

When two-division undisputed champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) won his last match, over Errol Spence Jr, he was showered in praise. Not only accolades but the river of potential follow-up fights also came flooding in. One of the more improbable bouts saw Crawford going head-to-head with undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KO’s).

Having been questioned about his desire to test his might against the red head, Bud said he was willing so long as they could meet somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, while conducting round tables at the first official presser for Alvarez versus Charlo, Canelo poured some cold water on the notion of a showdown with Crawford.

“I can’t go down anymore! But like he said, when they asked for the Gervonta [Davis] fight, [he] said he wouldn’t get credit for that fight; It’s the same for me. I don’t need to take that fight because everyone is going to say he is too small, he is too small, he is too small!”

SHIPS IN THE NIGHT

Even though the Mexican essentially killed the notion of their fighting, he clearly holds a great respect for Crawford.

“He needs to enjoy his fight, he deserves it!”

Social media is buzzing once again as a recent video has been posted of Canelo speaking on Box Azteca, doubling down with the same reason on why a Crawford fight won’t happen.

“There is no fight with Crawford. Now Imagine Crawford, a welterweight at 168lbs. . .I have everything to lose and nothing to gain. If I win, people will say he was very small.”

It will be interesting to see who Crawford gets in the ring to dance with next. He has openly stated that his first choice would be a showdown with undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo. Unfortunately for Bud, Charlo has already penned a contract to chuck knuckles with Canelo on September 30.

So that would push any chance of a Crawford-Charlo bout well into 2024. Therefore, Bud will have to continue looking for someone his own size to pick on. Meanwhile, Canelo is on a collision course with Charlo who is only moving up two divisions and not three. Yet, no matter who walks away from their fracas the victor, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news.
