Abel Ramos Overcomes Tahmir Smalls to Climb the Ranks at 147
After a tale of two halves, veteran Abel Ramos (29-6-3, 22KO) picked up the victory over former undefeated welterweight prospect Tahmir “The Biggest” Smalls (16-1, 11KO). The Pennsylvanian may have catapulted himself back into the title picture in the welterweight division.
The much younger Smalls controlled the first four rounds with the jab and sharp counter-punches. He used his height and footwork to perfection, landing punches then getting out of the way of any return-fire. It was looking as if it was going to be an easy night for the Philly fighter. Yet, his lack of experience became a huge factor in the later rounds.
It seemed as if a time clock went off in his head as Ramos came out on a mission from round five until the final bell. He changed the tempo of the fight by applying pressure and landing crushing body shots. The multiple-time title challenger kicked up the pressure once realizing The Biggest was getting weak in the closing rounds. When the final bell sounded, he was awarded the win by split decision.
In addition, he won a WBA minor title and could potentially secure a ranking within the top ten by the WBA organization. Inspired by this victory, Ramos wasted no time in throwing his name in the hat against the top names in the division.
