Claressa Shields Sounds Ready to Exit the Heavyweight Division

Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (18-0, 3 KOs) has never been one to shy away from daring moves, but her recent comments make it clear that her long-term future likely isn’t at heavyweight.

T-Rex is coming off a dominant unanimous decision win during her rematch with reigning unified super middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn on February 22 in Detroit, Michigan. During her post-fight interview, Shields gave a revealing answer, when asked about who she wants to fight next.

“I would love to share the ring with Shadasia (Green). I fight heavyweight at 175. All these girls know I weigh smaller than them… But Shadasia is at 168. I would go down to 168 to fight against her.”

“I would love to make my way back down to 162, 163 for a big fight with Mikaela Mayer, absolutely.”

While Shields is the undisputed champion at heavyweight, even she recognizes that heavyweight isn’t her optimal division.

TIME TO MOVE ON

Her callout of reigning unified super middleweight champion Shadasia Green is telling. Green operates at 168, a weight that is far more aligned with Shields’ natural frame. That’s a fight that makes sense, competitively.

The same logic applies to a potential showdown with Mikaela Mayer, even if that would require a catchweight or further negotiations. Mayer brings name recognition, skill, and marketability. At heavyweight, what’s left?

Shields has already proven she can dominate naturally larger opponents. But dominance without danger eventually loses its intrigue. The reality is that there are more compelling, elite challenges at 160 and 168. Furthermore, those divisions offer stronger stylistic matchups and greater historical significance for her legacy.

Shields’ greatness isn’t defined by how big she can fight. It’s defined by how many meaningful challenges she conquers. The most meaningful ones now appear to be below 175. If she truly believes she’s undersized and there’s no one at heavyweight who can push her, the logical move is clear: return to the divisions where the competition, and the legacy stakes, are highest.
