Usyk Needs Names Like Kabayel & Parker on his Résumé

Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has accomplished a lot in the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. He is undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Fame fighter. However, when boxing analyst Max Kellerman claimed that the Ukrainian’s heavyweight résumé was thin, some boxing fans lost their minds. Even so, Usyk would be remiss to pass over WBC Interim champion Agit Kabayel and the winner of Joseph Parker vs Fabio Wardley.

While talking on Inside Ring Show, Kellerman came under fire for his criticism of Usyk’s heavyweight run. In this author’s opinion, he was correct – the undisputed champion needs to do more. He only fought five heavyweights. Yes, he did defeat former champions Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Daniel Dubois, but that’s not enough.

Boxing fans were going overboard, calling him a top-five all-time great heavyweight. It’s been reported Usyk may face the winner of Parker vs Wardley. However, he also needs to fight Kabayel.

When looking at the rankings, there are plenty of names the undisputed champion should fight to improve his heavyweight résumé; top-rated guys like Frank Sanchez, Zhilei Zhang, Filip Hrgovic, and a rematch with Michael Hunter. Several pundits feel the undefeated, WBC and WBO #1-rated contender is the most dangerous challenger to Usyk’s thrown.

The absence Moses Itauma here is intentional, as this author believes he isn’t ready to face Usyk. The bottom line is there is plenty more he needs to do to improve on his heavyweight résumé.
