Sebastian Fundora Hopeful of Challenging Jermell Charlo Next
In his latest performance, WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KO’s) scalped his most decorated opponent to date in Keith Thurman. Not only did he win, but Fundora beat Thurman far worse than any other foe and is the only person to have stopped him. With Thurman now in his rearview mirror, The Towering Inferno thinks that former champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KO’s) would make for an ideal adversary.
“I think it’s a great fight, he [Charlo] is a PBC fighter as well; the last undisputed 154-pound champion as well. A fight with him seems like it makes sense.”
Naturally, Fundora would like to tangle with his fellow champions in the division. In a truly frustrating fashion, however, this does not seem to be on the forecast for Team Fundora. Between opposition facing one another, suspensions or managerial drama, all of his belt-holding brethren are unavailable. This is precisely why Charlo is a very viable option.
THE RETURN OF THE KING?
Should a showdown with Charlo come to fruition, it would somewhat of a risky one. Iron Man is hungry to reclaim the titles that he never lost in the ring. He lost the undisputed crown when the WBO stripped him of the title for not facing Tim Tszyu, but instead challenged then undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. In addition, he came under heavy criticism for his lackluster performance in defeat against Alvarez in 2023.
The Texan is still a grand talent, appears to have a good measure left in the tank, and his name still holds considerable weight with the media and fans. Theoretically speaking, The Towering Inferno could be the perfect fight for Charlo. Provided that he could clip Fundora, or snag a dominant points victory, his last performance would be forgiven.
Since this is mere fanciful speculation now, let’s wait and see what Team Fundora comes up with next.
