Rolando Romero Focused on Building his Boxing Legacy Over Money

When lightweight boxer Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12 KO’s) next slides into the ring he will nearly universally be recognized as a heavy underdog. This is because on May 28, he will face the challenge of Regular WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (26-0, 24 KO’s). Given that he has fought twice the amount of professional fights and has more notable names on his resume, the general consensus is that Rolly is in store for a long night of abuse.

Romero has heard all of this negative chatter regarding his odds for victory but pays it little mind. For his money, he believes that he is the better fighter who has had to travel a harder road to get to this point in his career. Not only that, Romero was firm in his conviction when he told Fight Hype that he’s done a great deal more than Tank with substantially fewer resources.

“Tank got promoted by Floyd [Mayweather] hardcore, right? He has twice as many fights as me. That’s an obvious reason why he is a more popular fighter. But at the end of it, I am a self-promoted fighter. He became world champion with 16 fights. I did it with 12. They found a reason why I was marketable enough to even be in this position. I am one of the most self-promoted fighters of all-time with the exception of the YouTubers. […] I am the number one self-promoted fighter in the game!”

HOW BRIGHT IS THE FUTURE?

Clearly, Romero thinks highly of himself and has grand ambitions for his future.

“I’m focused on some other things, about legacy. I’m going to be the greatest fighter of my era. I can’t say the greatest fighter of all-time because there are a lot of mothafuckers that I gotta compete with that I could never fight, I could never show that I’d be better than. Like, for instance, Floyd [Mayweather], prime [Robero] Duran at ’35. Man, prime Duran at ’35 would beat the shit out of me!”

While no one knows what the future truly holds, if Rolly was to pull off the upset versus Tank, that would be a good way to head him down the road he hopes to travel. Yet, time answers all questions. So first, let’s see what is waiting for Romero when he tests his might versus Tank Davis!
