Ryusei Matsumoto Dominates Takada & Proves Ready for Collazo
In an all-Japanese battle at the Buntai Arena in Yokohama, Japan, Ryusei Matsumoto (8-0, 4 KOs) retained the WBA Regular minimumweight title with a unanimous decision victory (120-108 on all three scorecards) over Yuni Takada. With the win, Matsumoto places himself firmly in line for a potential showdown with unified 105-pound champion Oscar Collazo.
From the opening bell, Matsumoto was in complete control. There was a clear disparity in talent between the two fighters. Takada (17-10, 3 KOs) tried his best throughout the contest. However, Matsumoto displayed superior skill, speed, and work-rate. For long stretches of the bout, the fight resembled a glorified sparring session as Matsumoto dictated the pace and action.
WHO COULD BE UPCOMING?
As for the future of Matsumoto, a clash with Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) is a definite possibility. The unified champion is widely viewed as the man to beat at 105 pounds, especially after scoring a sixth-round stoppage of Jesus Haro on March 14 in Anaheim, California.
With his speed and polished boxing skills, Matsumoto is one of the few fighters in the division who could pose a legitimate threat to Collazo. At some point, expect the World Boxing Association to order a bout between the two minimumweight champions.
