Xander Zayas Mauls Overmatched Larry Fryers In Three
Top Rank welterweight young gun Xander Zayas (9-0, 7 KO’s) continued his destructive ways against “Lethal” Larry Fryers (11-4, 4 KO’s). The red hot 18-year-old prospect accomplished this by way of an emphatic third round knockout. Zayas has now stopped five of his last six adversaries. While it is still early in his budding career, the Puerto Rican is off to a blazing start. It is also apparent that his team is trying to keep him busy. The young boxer was just in the ring a month and a half ago on the Navarrete versus Diaz card. Beyond that, Zayas has staged five fights since November 4, 2020 and this is his third fight of 2021.
Unfortunately for Fryers, the thrashing stands as his third consecutive loss, although this is the only knockout of the trio by stoppages. Unlike Zayas, Fryers had been out of the ring for almost a year to the day. In that bout, he dropped a unanimous decision loss to John Buaza, who also fought on this same card.
SHORT NIGHT
Right from the start, Zayas dominated Fryers by establishing and moving behind a very educated jab. Along with the lead punch, the Puerto Rican landed countless crisp left hooks to the head and body. By the end of the first period, Lethal Larry’s face was already marred by his young foe’s blows.
The strafing continued throughout the second but reached its crescendo in the third. Normally a come-forward fighter, Fryers was unable to get any consistent offense going and was reduced to eating punches. While being pushed back, Zayas was able to buzz Lethal Larry with the left hook that he had been employing since the opening round. Seeing that his man was impaired, the Puerto Rican put his foot on the gas in a responsible fashion. With Fryers’ back pent to the ropes, Zayas laced a series of hooks and straight rights together in such quick succession that referee Celestino Ruiz was forced to jump in to halt the action.
