Will Eddy Reynoso Be The Secret Weapon to Crawford’s Undoing?

On September 13 when accomplished boxer Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s) takes on undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KO’s), the main theme will be on weight. Most will wonder if Bud can bridge the two-weight division gap and compete. Yet, should the real question be: Can Crawford beat Canelo while armed with his chief second, and overseer of this era’s dirtiest teams, Eddy Reynoso?!

To begin, it is well known that Alvarez was caught red-handed housing clenbuterol in his system well back in 2018. Even more eye-brow raising, the transgression just so happened when facing one of his most dangerous, heavy-handed foes – Gennady Golovkin. In that instance however, he was given a slap on the wrist and sent on his way. While that is notable, the real crux of this controversial topic lies with Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso. This is because Reynoso is the one name directly connected to a bevy of questionable activity.

THE NEW MR. UNTOUCHABLE

As stated previously, Canelo was himself caught up in his own personal PED’s scandal. Yet, Eddy Reynoso has been connected with six known fighters busted for banned substances: Luis Nery (2017), Canelo Alvarez (2018), Julio Cesar Martinez busted (2019 and 2024), Oscar Valdez (2021), Jaime Munguia (2025), and Francisco Rodriguez (2025). You can even call it seven fighters if you throw in his temporary charge Ryan Garcia (2024) .

Considering the heftiness of this list, and the fact that three were caught this year, this is rather alarming. Naturally, fans and supporters of Alvarez and Reynoso will be offended by even the implication that this team is dirty. But ask yourself: what high profile coach in the last fifty years has had this many flagged fighters? And, who seems to be getting flagged more as time passes by?

Logic demands that either Reynoso is a willing participant in his boxers’ willful desecrating one of boxing’s most sacred rules or he is one of the unluckiest trainers in the history of the sport. Only time will tell.
