GGG has a new trainer

Recently, former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin surprised many with the news he was parting ways with long-time trainer Abel Sanchez. With “GGG” having an upcoming fight against Steve Rolls next month, as well as recently signing a multi-million dollar deal with DAZN, the question was who would pick up the training duties for Sanchez?

3KingsBoxing has learned Golovkin gave the answer to that question.

During a press conference in Las Vegas, the former world middleweight champion announced he will now be trained by Jonathan Banks. He previously trained former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and is the current trainer of undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus.

Also, he learned the tricks of the trade from the late Emanuel Steward.
Banks and Golovkin disclosed during the press conference today they have been working together at Golovkin’s training camp in Big Bear, California for two weeks. Golovkin said of Banks:

“He’s young but he has good experience, he’s old school. I like old school. He learned from Emanuel Steward. I believe in this school of boxing.”

Banks said that in spite of the short time working together, he feels he has adequate time to prepare for Rolls. He also noted that Golovkin entered training camp in very good shape. Banks was asked if there’s any concern about Golovkin’s age. He responded by saying age is irrelevant and that he sees hunger and passion from the former champ.

While Abel Sanchez expressed anger over their split, for his part, Golovkin says he harbors no ill feelings. For “GGG”, he wants to move on and keep learning.
