Derevyanchenko Wants to Nullify the Judges and Knockout Jaime Munguia

On June 10, WBC number-four ranked junior middleweight Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10KO) and number-two ranked Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33KO) will fight in a high stakes match-up. The Ukrainian wants to win by knockout to avoid the chance of receiving another decision loss.

The Technician has been on the receiving end of his share of bad decisions. It is the reason behind his statement to Fight Hype of wanting to stop Munguia instead of letting the judges decide the winner.

“Of course, I want to win [by knocking him out]. But I don’t want this decision. Because I was in decisions with Daniel Jacobs and [Gennady] Golovkin, and every guy is a close fight, and you don’t know who wins.”

Derevyanchenko’s fight with the undefeated Mexican is possibly a title eliminator, given their ranks. So, he is right to feel that a knockout is warranted, considering Munguia is a heavy favorite.

A HISTORY OF DECISIONS GOING AGAINST HIM

The Ukrainian’s concerns about not getting a fair decision are warranted when looking into past fights. In 2018, he felt the sting of a poor decision against Jacobs for the vacant IBF title. In 2019, the judges stung him again with another bad ruling against Golovkin in a fight many fans thought he won. Then in 2021, The Technician was denied a victory in a close fight again in a WBC title eliminator with Carlos Adames.

At 37 years old, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, whose three out of four losses were title fights, could be getting his final chance at competing for the championship.
